Detailed Course Description

Lesson 1: Music for Enlightenment—Introducing the Notes, Scales, and Rhythms of the Raga

This lesson includes an inspiring talk by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of Maharishi Gandharva Veda music, in which he answers a series of questions on Gandharva Veda posed to him by a German journalist.

Anita will teach you the Maharishi Gandharva Veda scale and will introduce you to some of the principal elements of a Raga.

Lesson 2: Introduction to Alankar—Ornaments or Scale

In Maharishi Gandharva Veda music one learns series of ‘Alankars’. Alankars are musical phrases in which the first phrase is elaborated in successive phrases. These ornamented phrases help to strengthen your voice and develop your sense of tonal range.

Lesson 3: Introduction to Raga Yaman

In this lesson you will learn your first Raga, Raga Yaman, a beautiful Raga that is traditionally sung during the first quarter of the night. You will learn the basic characteristics of a Raga and the principal elements of this deep evening melody.

Lesson 4: Introduction to Raga Bhairav

Raga Bhairav is a morning Raga. Singing Raga Bhairav enlivens the refreshing qualities of this time of day, which give vitality to all of creation.

Mid-Course Review

In this Review you will go over everything that you learned in lessons 1 – 4 and have plenty of time to practice.

Lesson 5: Second Series of Alankar

Now that you are more familiar with the notes of Maharishi Gandharva Veda you will learn the second series of Alankars, which develop greater flexibility and versatility of your voice.

Lesson 6: Introduction to Raga Bhupali

This lesson will introduce you to the three traditional different forms of Ragas and teach you the basics of singing Raga Bhupali, a traditional evening Raga. The effect of singing Raga Bhupali is very settling in preparation for the evening’s rest.

Lesson 7: Introduction to Raga Rageshri

Raga Rageshri is a profound Raga that is also sung in the first quarter of the night from 7 to 10 p.m. Listening to and singing Raga Rageshri has a very settling effect on the mind and body.

Lesson 8: Learning Two Sanskrit Shlokas and the Principles of Performance

In this class you will learn two beautiful Sanskrit Shlokas, verses from the ancient Vedic texts set to melody. Anita will also review for you the basic structure of a Raga which is adhered to when performing. The highlight of Lesson 8 is a talk by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in which he brings to light the profound significance of the Alaap, the slow introductory section that begins a Raga. In this talk Maharishi explains that the practice of music is practicing enlightenment.

End-of-Course Review

In this class you will review everything you learned in Lessons 5 – 8 and you will have ample time to practice the Alankars, Ragas, and Shlokas that were covered in the second half of the course.

You can see that this is a very full introduction to Maharishi Gandharva Veda, a very precious aspect of Maharishi’s Vedic Science. We hope that you will choose to take the course and become a center of harmony in your home and in your world.
